Summary of the Epic
In a kingdom of Denmark, King Hrothgar and his men are being terrorized by Grendel, a demon descended of Cain. Grendel is angered by the song and joy he hears in the hall. The terrorizing goes on for twelve years until a young warrior by the name of Beowulf decides to end it once and for all. Beowulf took fourteen of the bravest Geats with him to Denmark. When he arrived, he offered to defeat Grendel. Remembering a favor he had done for Beowulf's father at one point in time, the king accepts Beowulf's offer to battle the demon Grendel.
Beowulf and his men stayed in the mead hall awaiting Grendel. While the men were sleeping, Grendel woke up. The first man at the door was attacked. Grendel attempted to attack Beowulf, but Beowulf grabs a hold of Grendel’s arm and doesn't let go. Eventually Beowulf is able to use his super strength to tear off Grendel’s arm. Grendel is defeated, and he goes back into his lair and dies.
Beowulf is awarded by King Hrothgar for the victory. However, the killing of Grendel angered his mother. To avenge the death of her son, Grendel's mom steals a great warrior from Heorot, who is King Hrothgar's best friend. Beowulf is then asked to kill Grendel's mother. He traveled to her lair in the river. When he arrives, Grendel’s Mother took him to battle hall. Beowulf attempts to kill her with the sword that was given to him by King Hrothgar, but it is no use. Instead he takes a sword from elsewhere and succeeds in killing her.
Years later,Beowulf became the King- following the death of Hrothgar. A dragon is awakened from his slumber by an escaped slave who steals a cup from his mound of treasure. Angered, The Dragon then begins terrorizing the kingdom. Beowulf went to the tower where the Dragon lived with only a sword and a shield in hand. They both melt from the fire breathing dragon. Beowulf was almost defeated in his battle with The Dragon, until one loyal warrior, Wiglaf, comes back and helps him. The Dragon is then defeated in what would be Beowulf's third and final battle.
Sadly, Beowulf is killed as a result of fatal injuries sustained in his last battle. Before he passes, he tells Wiglaf that he would like to be remembered by having a tower built for him. Wiglaf, being the only loyal warrior, goes on to tell the tale of the battle,
